Vault: 88-Keys – “Will Make Songs 4 Food”
Here is a song I worked on a few years ago but never finished. When you read the chorus, the words encased in parenthesis is what was meant to be recorded. I never got around to it because the Chief Abstract (a.k.a. Q-Tip) wanted to buy this beat from me.
I Remember It Like It Was Yesterday:
I suppose ‘Tip didn’t have my mobile number on him at the time so he called my parents’ house on Long Island. Funny thing was, I was actually paying them a visit that day. My sister Mary answered the phone. When she realized who she was speaking to, all Hell broke loose. She completely flipped out & got hype as Hell. Could you blame her though? It’s Q-TIP MAN!!!
Well, needless to say, he decided not to move forward with getting this beat from me. All good though. I think ‘Tip would have sound super dope on this beat. Hey, maybe it’s not too late. *hmmm*
Well I hope you all enjoy this little ditty. This song is for all of my peoples out there who make beats, raps & songs in pursuit of a career in the music industry while those damn bills keep piling.
I’m sure some of you out there could relate. I know there were times when I definitely could.
Again, this song is a few years old (as you will notice from me not having my [now] usual vocal effect on my verses. Also, this was 2 tracked straight out my MP’ (a.k.a. Raw Dawg). Enjoy!
88-Keys:
Just the icing on the cake
Sample: “Just another song…”
That I made
To keep my life stable
I had to do
These damn white labels
Had I been asked
If I got ‘love for New York1‘
I’d reply, “No!”
But yo I like cable
Now my beats
Pay my utilities
With incredible feats
And capabilities
I don’t need to be
A starving artist
I gotta keep food in my belly
To keep it rounder than a knight’s table2
And like Clark Gable
Your money’s Gone With The Wind
Usually what happens dog
It’s gone when you spend
Usually what happens dog
It’s gone with your friends
Usually what happens dog
Your friends spend your ends
Usually
You will see about 2 or 3
Notice of cancellation
When I take my occupation
Into consideration
Nah I’m doing it
I won’t let
These muthaf*ckin’ bills ruin it
Chorus:
Sample: “Just another song…”
That I made to keep the lights on
(I work so hard)
Until the night’s gone
(Can’t call it luck when you make)
The right song
(Will get you paid n’ paying bills with your)
Ice on
(Yeah!)
This is
Sample: “Just another song…”
Now I ain’t have a 9 to 5 since 19-
95 I think I was 193
I sort of lied
Just to have the right things
On my job resumé
Like the head of state
Not Bush but Bill4
And the head was great (yeah)
From chics
Who want me
To produce their demo tapes (sure)
Are you seducing 88′? (naw)
If that’s what they said
They’re coughing up bread
But if they’re short with my cash
Then it’s off with their heads for real
I don’t do this
Just to say that I do this so chill
With the, “Let’s collab.”
When in fact you ain’t paying me back
With cheap thrills n*gga
That won’t last
Think about all that *ss
Next time you use your bus pass
And getting only one damn check
And stretching it out for a month
‘Cause it must last misses
Really sucks *ss this is
Chorus:
Sample: “Just another song…”
That I made to keep the lights on
(I work so hard)
Until the night’s gone
(Can’t call it luck when you make)
The right song
(Will get you paid n’ paying bills with your)
Ice on
(Yeah!)
This is
Sample: “Just another song…”
Is what I make
When I’m trapped in a zone
Sometimes I’m taking a break
And napping at home
But then my ears
Start to ache
So I answer the phone
Sh*t
I got called by collections
They tell me pay my past due & what have you
I Jedi mind trick ‘em
Can I take a message?
‘Cause he ain’t here
I’m his roommate
Before they figure it out
That sh*t is too late
Pony up? What the f*ck!
Man you quacking like ducks
Y’all won’t get a buck
Until I get my tunes straight
So now I’m making beats
Like tomorrow’s doom’s day
‘Cause I gotta see this paper
Likes it’s Newsday
And on a new day
The drama is insane
They calling me for bills
That I put in my momma’s name
It’s not the game
Don’t talk down on me
Like you’re the taller kid
I should’ve checked my caller id
Chorus:
Sample: “Just another song…”
That I made to keep the lights on
(I work so hard)
Until the night’s gone
(Can’t call it luck when you make)
The right song
(Will get you paid n’ paying bills with your)
Ice on
(Yeah!)
This is
Sample: “Just another song…”
Note:
- This line is not to say that I don’t like my hometown state of NY but rather to reference the VH1 show I Love New York. The reference is actually towards paying the cable bill. Time Warner biYotches!!!
- King Arthur’s court. Knights of The Round Table. Get it now?
- This is very true. My last actual job was cook/cleaner at KFC in Kinston, NC back in 1995; a year after I graduated high school. (Do the math)
- Need I even reference this one? Who could forget the Lewinsky Scandal?
Post Script: My wife just told me this was one of her favorite beats I’ve made. Reminds her of Summer time. (Here is where you all say, “Awww”)
Btw, like all other raps you may (or may not) have heard from me, this is all freestyle off the top of the head. Nothing written. *booyah*

Good lyrics man! Ha* I hear that.
Thanks.
Все замечательно: и по стилю изложения, и по содержимому. Так держать!
